Why should I use granite for my countertops?

Granite is one of the hardest materials on earth. Granite countertops are the most popular choice due to the versatility and superior performance characteristics; and because not two slabs of granite are the same, your work surface will be truly unique. Unlike any other materials, granite does not lose its shine and luster.

Is granite heat resistant?

Granite can withstand a dish hot from the oven or stove right onto its surface. Most “man made” synthetic solid-surface tops cannot.

Is granite scratch resistant?

The fact that granite is one of the hardest stones next to diamonds means that normal use will not damage your counter or tabletops. A granite counter top is nearly impossible to scratch but it will dull your knives so we suggest using cutting boards

Will my granite chip or crack?

Granite can be damaged, but not very easily. A sharp blow from a heavy object can chip it, but it will never break under normal kitchen conditions.

Does granite stain?

All natural stone is porous, but of all of the stones, granite is the least porous. Amazon Stone takes steps to ensure your granite is properly protected against staining including polishing the stone and impregnating a resin before it ships from the manufacturer and applying another sealant after installation in your home. Water left on the granite for a long period of time will produce a dark spot, however, over time this spot will disappear. Oil left on the granite will slowly be absorbed into the stone and should be wiped away as these spillages occur. Over time, the oil will redistribute through the granite and become undetectable.

What if my granite needs to be seamed? Won’t that spoil the look?

Not if installation is done correctly. Seams are made when two pieces of granite are put together and bonded with a thin line of epoxy mixed with a color that matches the stone. The joint is then smoothed, leaving the seam barely visible

How do I care for my granite countertops?

Mild soap and water works fine.  Spray cleaners are also available that contain an anti-bacterial agent and are specially made for granite. Never use cleaners that contain acid, citrus base, ammonia, bleach, or scouring powders. These can damage the finish.

What colors and patterns are available?

A broad spectrum of colors and an interesting array of patterns offer endless possibilities. Colors include many choices in golden browns, pale pinks, deep plums, romantic reds, exotic blues, greens, blacks and many subtle shades in-between.

Surface patterns typically will have a flecked or pebbled appearance, which can vary in size and shape and in the density of the pattern depending on the particular mix of quartz, crystals and minerals that make up the stone.

What are the differences between an under-mount sink and a drop-in?

A drop-in sink is, just that, dropped in from above the counter top, into the sink cut out. There is no additional cost and most cost-conscious consumers choose this option. An under-mount sink sits beneath the surface, under a polished rim. The benefit to this option is that it provides a smooth surface from counter to sink. Because of additional polishing involved, there is an upgrade charge for this alternative.

How do I know when it is time to sealed my granite?

A simple water test is all it takes. Take a glass of ice water and place it on the counter. If, after it has had time to condense, the water beads and wipes up with no discoloration then you are fine. If the glass leaves a dark ring on the countertop then the sealer has been compromised and it is time to repeat the application process. We are happy to provide this service. However, it is quite simple and takes very little time and effort. These materials should be sealed with a penetrating sealer from time to time.

Caring for Your Onyx Counter Tops

The first thing to do is make sure your onyx is sealed at the time it is installed. This helps greatly in preventing staining, dulling and etching. Your installers should do this for you. Regular maintenance includes wiping up spills as they occur—don’t leave a spill overnight. Be especially careful with acidic liquids such as vinegar, wine or fruit juice. Periodically use a soft cloth with non-acidic cleaning products to remove dirt and amplify the stone’s shine. Do not spray cleaner directly onto the counter top. Spray onto the dry cloth instead, to prevent the stone from absorbing the cleaner. Wipe away excess cleaner as you go. Use a cutting board when preparing meals on an onyx counter top to avoid scratches.
